Victor Conte used to run BALCO Laboratories.  For those of you who are not followers of sports, that’s the company that was at front and center of the steroids scandal in baseball and other sports.

Conte has now served his prison term.  But he’s not done with sports.  In fact, he has announced that he has the solution to the doping problem.  He now has a company that provides supplements that are guaranteed to meet all global standards.

It’s surprising to see, and hard to trust, but we can give him the benefit of the doubt.  Others have mended their ways.

But let’s also take notice of his warning that there are now new drugs that athletes are using, supposedly without fear of being detected.

Steroids, HGH, and EPO are now being joined, he alleges, by IGF-1 LR3.  There are, no doubt, others.

And once the new drug is banned and an effective test for it is in place, it’s likely that something else will come along.

Why?  Because everyone wants an edge, especially athletes.

The problem for us is that business people are often no different.  The sheer number of sports metaphors in a typical business conversation is all that you need to realize how similar the thinking often is.

It may be good to remind your colleagues that every sports metaphor they use is a reminder of the need to resist the temptation to cheat.
