The HCCA Managed Care Compliance Conference in Arizona is rolling late into its second day. If you thought you’d heard every acronym, every new audit focus, and every crazy policy workaround, you aren’t here! Tried and true advice mixed with great stories and personal experiences, and several hundred colleagues to share, laugh, and chug coffee. The smaller venue is providing a wonderful venue for extended conversations, and making real connections.

The speakers have been fun and informative, and it never ceases to amaze that the same compliance issues keep resurfacing, year after year, with only minor changes in focus. We can take calls on our watches, our refrigerators connect to the internet, and cars are driving themselves, but somehow claims are still not reliably prepared, and policies still languish on shelves without being encoded into operations. The technology is there, but adoption is slow and tedious because it requires a change, disruption, new learning. Which is always a tough sell in an industry already overwhelmed by its fast pace and relentless chaotic changes.

Hats off to the compliance folks, who continue to smile and push onward, part nannies, part cheerleaders, part detectives. All around, a great group of people, doing their best to make our healthcare system do more of what it should, and less of what it shouldn’t. Keep up the good fight, and see you all at the next conference!
