Attending the Institute at Las Vegas was one of my most enriching experience and it was indeed a pleasure sharing the roof with the world’s largest gathering of compliance professionals.

My last minute decision to reach out to SCCE and talking to CEO Roy Snell enforced my conviction that I should attend the Institute and I would have regretted if I had not attended the same.  Of course the valid US Visa came handy.

The team at SCCE were very friendly including Debbie Troklus, Marjorie Doyle, Odell Guyton and Art Weiss and it was very thoughtful for them to arrange a sit down breakfast for international delegates to help them get over the jet lag as well as break the ice.

I was particularly impressed with the eminent lineup of speakers as well as the excellent pedigree of exhibitors.  I believe that I have been able to interact with the entire ecosystem of corporate compliance & ethics at one go.   It was also heartening to know that a lot of companies were also 1st time exhibitors reaffirming that I too had invested wisely.

Further there have been great learnings for me along the way.   I particularly found the session by Donna Boehme & Patrick Gnazzo very informative.   It was good to understand the evolution from compliance 1.0 to compliance 2.0 globally and the need to differentiate between legal and compliance.   I found the same very intuitive and believe that though the distinction is marginal, it is very real and as a company grows, the challenges will become self evident.  It is not enough to be legally compliant.   The company ultimately has to become ethical in order to avoid legal complications in the future because a legal solution may be neither compliance nor ethical.  This is not possible without involvement of the senior management.  They need to walk the talk.

A lot of this may seem to be futuristic to Indian companies at this point but I believe that due to technology adoption and globalization, India will need to comply with the same more earlier that latter as compared to US historical experience.

It was also an eye opener that all companies in India and globally whilst dealing with US & UK companies have to comply with their several regulations like FCPA, UK Bribery Act amongst others which is not happening presently. The emphasis on training in the entire compliance progress cannot be understated.

Kudos to the SCCE team.
