Fact: money doesn’t grow on trees. This means that those huge FCPA fines we see in the news are being paid in regular money, not magic-money-tree money.

And that regular money has to come from somewhere, but we don’t talk about that very much. Part of that is because we can’t know for sure, of course—but it’s just common sense that a government fine is a cost, and businesses deal with new costs by either cutting other costs or increasing revenue.

And one way to reduce costs is to cut headcount.

So, we went through the big FCPA fines from 2014, and then searched to see if any layoffs happened around the time that the settlement was announced.
