Little did I know when I arrived in steamy Orlando that my stage career was about to take off. When Michael Woodford plucked me from obscurity during his keynote address this morning to be his stone-faced Mori-San, I was not sure I would be able to rise to the occasion. Of course, it was an honor to briefly portray the Chief of Global Compliance for a huge Japanese corporation. But I was a little dismayed to learn that my role was to blindly follow the corrupt leader of Olympus. As a former federal prosecutor and Deputy Director of CMS’s Center for Program Integrity, and as a current partner at the law firm of LeClairRyan advising providers such as hospitals on compliance and other general counsel matters, I felt the role of dishonest corporate malfeasor was not a natural. But, since I am never one to shy away from a challenge, I summoned up all my Method Acting expertise, and pretended to be non-compliant. Very difficult, but Mr. Woodford was convinced, and said I was the best Mori-San he ever had. High praise indeed. Gotta run now, meeting with my new Hollywood agent. –Ted
