I was very happy to see the badge tags “Excited for Ethics” and “Crazy about Compliance” when I was checking into the conference yesterday.

When people ask me what I do as a Compliance Officer for the university I often include in my answer that I am a salesman for compliance. I say this as I am constantly engaging others in the institution and explaining to them the value proposition of compliance and how it ties into their goals and that of the institution.

In order to “buy in” to ethics and compliance, others in the institution have to understand why it is important to them. They must be “sold” on compliance and how it is a value add and not a negative. Therefore, I would argue that if you are not a salesman and constantly out there selling compliance, the chances for success of your program will be limited.

In addition to selling compliance, we must also be excited about compliance and it’s important role in the success of the institution. If we are not excited about it, why would someone else be? Compliance is exciting, it is important, it is interesting and it does not have to be looked at as something negative or as a hassle but rather as an important value add that can help everyone in every area of the university succeed.

So, maybe we need a conference session on sales as in the end, I feel we are all salesmen (or women) for compliance. Additionally, we must truly be Excited about Ethics and Crazy about Compliance as if we aren’t, how can we expect others to be?
