This was my 2nd HCCA Conference that I’ve had the opportunity to attend. I had the option of attending the HCCA academy in Orlando, FL in November or the conference here in Oct. I knew I would glean a lot of information at this conference, so opted to come to the Enforcement conference.

I enjoyed Roy Snell’s opening remarks, stating how he built HCCA from the ground up. And how far compliance has come in the last 20 years.

I enjoyed his story about his presence being requested in Bosnia to try and bring compliance to a war-torn country.

My coworker and I had the pleasure of meeting Roy in person Monday evening to discuss compliance and ethics in person.

What I gleaned from today’s talk was this; it’s not about getting your way, it’s about learning about your environment. The tree that grew misshapen, grew in its environment in order to live.

Jenny O’Brien was introduced by Roy as a person who was able to influence people.

To be able to influence, you need to understand your audience. What we do, as compliance officers, affects every other department.

Jenny also stated that you should not let the work plan become the work. To be a change agent you need to make communication key. Also, being objective and not subjective will gain you so much more in the long run. Being an active listener and understanding what the needs are will also benefit you.

I have truly enjoyed this conference and look forward to learning more each year.
