Ready to Speak…

My stomach is in knots, I’m reminding myself to breathe properly, and in my mind I hear, “Why do I keep applying to do this?” I’m leading a session that starts in five minutes, and I’m a little bit terrified. Several months ago I decided I wanted to speak on how to use sales techniques to sell compliance to an internal audience. A Compliance Officer’s internal audience includes his or her Board, CEO, managers and the general work population. When I was chosen to speak at the London CEI, I thought, “Great! Now I need to read all of those books on sales techniques!” I spent the next three months reading books by Zig Ziglar, David Sandler, Robert Cialdi and others gathering techniques for my talk. I’d practiced my talk before my husband and my dogs. I was ready. As I took the stage to begin, I found my feet and my confidence. At the end of my talk, I was proud of how it had gone. The nerves were gone, replaced with an adrenaline that said, “That was fun! When can I do that again?”
