After attending the General Session on Tuesday morning at the HCCA Research Conference and listening to CMS, Roseanne Hakim, PhD. I saw many people leave with the glazed over look, shaking their head. You know they are thinking, what have I got myself into? How am I going to wrap my head around this?

Well you start one experience at time. In compliance you are continually being approached with the unexpected and novel problem. Each problem is a building block to your next problem and each time you are adding to that experience. until one day you are sitting in a compliance conference and you actually know the answers to some of the questions.

I encourage young professionals in the compliance field to not be discouraged my your lack of knowledge, but looking at your lack of knowledge as an open field, a blank slate and absorb your experiences like a sponge. Enjoy the novel and new because one day you will be able to stand in front of the microphone and ask thought provoking questions that cause government regulators to pause and say “we need to reform our billing laws.” Keep up the good work.
