There are a lot of one-liners and other descriptive phrases coming out of the HCCA Compliance Institute. You see many of them posted as Twitter posts; in fact you can learn a lot just by reading all those posts on Twitter. One that I saw yesterday made the point that as Compliance Officers we should not be thought of as police but rather as lifeguards. We are helping to make sure people don’t get themselves in trouble and if they do, we can help pull them out of their mess. I realized how nicely this idea was reflected in the work of HCCA’s choice of our service project this year here in Orlando. Their phrase of Hands Up, not Hands Out is a great description of what we should all be doing in our roles. We’re not to bail folks out and not take the opportunity to teach and remind them of important rules and regulations. Just like a lifeguard, we can put, or respond to, a hand up and offer our help.
