As a faculty member of the International Academies, we are currently in Brussels at the Basic Compliance & Ethics Academy. After several days here, it is clear to me that regardless of what country we are from, what primary language we speak, or whether we have different responsibilities within our compliance role, the participants and speakers were universal in discussing ethical issues and concerns that face us as compliance professionals.

This class has been very interactive and vocal with regard to ethical issues and concerns, and because of the variety of countries and roles that are represented by the class participants, a range of complexities have been discussed around these types of issues. Additionally, the topic really overlaps with conflicts of interest and other types of compliance areas that are critical to an effective compliance program.

There is some comfort in knowing that there are no language barriers related to these issues, and that our efforts to address ethical concerns can be shared and implemented in our different cultures and organizations.

  1. I must say, while I am here at my first Compliance Institue, participating in speed networking …. I love having dialogue with peers who speak the same language. The passion for our field of work is evident.
