Influencing Decisions (Live from the HECI)

Really enjoyed the presentation on influencing. The real life examples were helpful and gave real life perspective on how I can make a better difference at my health system.

I especially enjoyed the conversation about emotional intelligence and IQ. As a relatively new compliance officer, I sometimes struggle to get buy in at the employee level. I’m lucky to have wonderful executive support but the midlevel managers often don’t see the bigger picture and don’t always enforce compliance related changes. After hearing Jenny and Roy speak I can take back their practice examples.

With any change, leaders must explain and make the audience understand the “why” of the change and how it will impact them. I think having emotional intelligence skills will help managers and me be more receptive to concern and feedback regarding the change. I think a lot of time we try to hammer change but don’t take a lot of time to actively listen to our employees and how changes will affect them.

I also appreciated the comments about walking in the shoes of the front line workers. I know I struggle “getting out there” as often as I should, as other higher priorities come up. It was a great reminder for me to be aware of what is going on in departments and to develop relationships with the staff and managers. I have been fortunate to gain credibility and trust from my executive team and governing body but have a lot of work still in gaining trust throughout the ranks.

I am thankful for the opportunity to be here in Washington and learn from the best.
