Do you need to attend the Compliance Institute every year? This is a question many employers are asking their compliance staff. Can you save money by attending only periodically, or trading which employees attend? Of course, you can. However, is it worth it to do so? Perhaps not. Annual attendance at the CI is one of the best ways to assure continued professional development and progress toward compliance program maturity.

This is my fourth CI, and each one has been a valuable experience, expanding both my knowledge base and my peer network. Every year, new topics and speakers are presented, addressing the latest in regulatory changes, enforcement actions, and emerging risks. This keeps the conference fresh, year after year. Nevertheless, even the recycled topics by the same speakers add value. New perspectives, varying questions and answers, and even my own work experiences throughout the year have led me to sign up for some of the same sessions two years in a row and I am usually not disappointed.

Organizations should weight the professional and organizational benefits of annual conference attendance with financial considerations, taking care to ensure that their compliance professionals are provided with adequate educational and supportive resources if the CI is not an option every year.
