Research done on culture and organizational performance by Kotter and Heskett defines culture as “…gained knowledge, explanations, values, beliefs, communication and behaviors of large group of people, at the same time and same place.”  They concluded that differences in culture explains why one company succeeds where another fails within an industry. Consider Apple verses Blackberry, or Target verses Kmart. It wasn’t just the strategy that determined the success of the company, it was the culture.  The ultimate summary statement on the topic may have been Peter Drucker’s familiar saying, “Culture eats strategy for lunch.” Read more

Research misconduct is common among Middle East scientists, survey says

Research misconduct is a serious problem in the Middle East, a survey of academic scientists there shows.

Nearly 60% of respondents reported committing at least one breach of research ethics, and almost 75% said they knew of similar problems among their colleagues. “Scientific misconduct represents a significant issue in several universities in the Middle East,” the paper says. Read more

How China and the US are emboldening whistle-blowers in the fight against corporate corruption

The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s recently released 2017 whistle-blower report shows a 72 per cent increase in informants coming from mainland China and Hong Kong.

In 2016, a total of 36 people who filed reward submissions under the Dodd-Frank Act were from the mainland and Hong Kong, compared with 62 this year. Read more
