Of course an annual event at the HCCA Compliance Institute reminds us the importance of compliance in our organization(s). However, what’s often lost is not the “what” to deliver in our role, but rather the “how”. Every organization has a different culture. Is it a culture of transparency and openness, or rather a culture of suspicion and guarded secrets. Educating yourself on your organization’s culture will determine how effective you can implement your compliance program to a much greater degree than the vast amount of knowledge you can accumulate. Understanding how to navigate this culture landscape will allow you to slowly shape the compliance behavior expected of a high ethical organization.
