It looks like we will have about 1,500 people in attendance for this year’s Compliance and Ethics Institute, September 25th – 28th in Chicago. This gathering is important for our profession. We have a lot of people trying to speak for our profession. They are trying to determine the level of independence we need to be successful. Some are trying to determine how we define a compliance program. Others are trying to define the role of the Compliance and Ethics Officer. We are a young profession. It is understandable that everyone wants in on the act and young professions are more vulnerable than established professions. But some of these people do not have enough experience to define these things. Others do not have our best interest in mind. However, many of these people become reluctant to opine when they see the profession gathering in such large numbers and speaking for itself. They also are beginning to understand that the SCCE/HCCA now has over 16,000 members and that has affected their willingness to speak for our profession.

If we continue to work together, gather in large numbers, and compliance professionals continue to join the SCCE and HCCA, we will continue to make progress on the many issues that are important to defining the role of the compliance and ethics officer and the function of the compliance and ethics program. I hope to see you there.

  1. Great post Roy! We are indeed evolving as a profession, and even at a watershed moment now where those who sought to define us as a captive subset of Legal or any other function have realized that we will define ourselves now. SCCE has been an amazing organizing force for the profession! That is the story of #Compliance2.0 and the profession emerging as an independent subject matter expert that DOJ , SEC and other gatekeepers expect to see in an architecture that provides empowerment, independence, line of sight, seat at the table and resources to do the job well! Standby for my column on this! It is so important for Compliance professionals to support the continued development of our craft and profession by attending the CEI! Thanks to you for your leadership! #TheRisingCCOLiftsAllBoats Donna
