As a 4th time attendee of the HCCA Managed Care Compliance Conference, I continue to learn something new each year and value the networking opportunities provided by this event. Here were the 5 top takeaways I got out of the sessions from Day One:

1. Make sure everyone is on the same page when interpreting a regulation – including Business Owners, Legal, and Compliance (“Building Preventative Measures Into Your Compliance Program”)

2. Have clinicians role play as a CMS reviewer as part of monthly monitoring for Special Needs Plan (SNP) Model of Care (MOC). (“”Strategies for Consistent Audit Readiness”).

3. Interactive team activities are a great way to illustrate your point with compliance concepts (such as the difference between being provided with step-by-step instructions, an overall picture without specifics, or no guidance at all)- even with Lincoln Logs and Legos! (“Achieving and Maintaining a State of Readiness”).

4. If a corrective action plan (CAP) cannot be closed timely, be sure to document why and develop metrics based on the complexity of the incident. For example, aim to correct issues with low complexity within 30 days; or 60-90 days for situations with high impact. (“Assessing Your Compliance Program”).

5. You have permission to lie when you say “I’m sorry!” (“The Seven Habits of an Effective Compliance & Ethics Professional”).
